Looking back at the Porn & Pancakes forum
Porn and Pancakes is not watching porno and having breakfast together, it’s actually mens’ gatherings where the effects of porn are talked about in a small community environment. The program discussed the addictive epidemic of pornography affecting everyone in our culture. As it was pointed out, this issue in particular is the “big blue elephant in the room” that no one wants to deal with or even admit. This is particularly the case within the church, as sexual sin is the #1 issue.
The two speakers that came from XXX Church were Jason Harper (outreach pastor from Sacramento) and Donny Pauling (former porn producer). They mentioned the three goals of XXX Church:
- truly love and care for those in the porn industry (not their actions, but the people)
- provide tools and guidance for people addicted to pornography
- bring awareness to the church on these issues
Given Donny’s background, they spent considerable time detailing some of the inner workings and experiences from one who worked in the porn industry. There is a LOT that was said, but they actually have most of it in audio format (go here). I will try to sum it up that it creates an “unhealthy fantasy world”, but also causes a wave of destruction in relationships and life to those that get involved in being part of porn or to those that are obsessed with viewing porn. I do want to point out that XXX Church is not advocating toward ending the porn industry - just bringing awareness to the actual reality of the industry.
So, the question then becomes if you are thinking right now that maybe you do have a problem, what do you do? XXX Church has identified three steps:
- Confess you have a problem!
- Tell others! Porn is definitely a big “alone” thing, so get someone else setup that you will have to be accountable to. XXX Church gives away free X3Watch accountability software.
- Clean it up - get rid of what you have and stop continuing the habit
New Venture Christian Church has kept the website up for the event but with resources linked - go here to find out further.
The Chesterfield Observer wrote an article titled “Porn & Pancakes” that made the front cover a few days before the event. The Richmond Times-Dispatch had a writer who was there (at least afterwards), who wrote the article “Evils of porn discussed at forum“.
