The Chesterfield County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension invites you to be an exhibitor in the Arts and Crafts Building at the Chesterfield County Fair. The fair will be held Friday, Aug. 28, through Saturday, Sept. 5. All exhibitors are required to deliver exhibits on Thursday, Aug. 27, between 3 and 8 p.m., to the Arts and Crafts Building.
Competition is open to all interested parties to enter items in the various categories: general farm crops; flowers; foods, including breads, cakes, pies, cookies and candies; canned goods, including vegetables, fruits, relishes, pickles, jellies, jams and preserves; home arts and crafts; quilts; threadworks; sewing; arts; photography; and 4-H. Entries must be the product or work of the exhibitor. There are no entry fees. No professionals will be allowed to enter competition in categories associated with their professions.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - The Chesterfield County Department of Building Inspection has declared July as Swimming Pool Safety Awareness Month. Building Inspection is reminding county residents about the importance of swimming-pool safety, as outlined in the county building code, and is offering free inspections of residential swimming pools.
County residents may call 804-748-1779 to schedule free pool inspections. Inspectors will check pools for safety-related issues. If a problem is discovered, the Department of Building Inspection will provide the owner guidance about repairs and, if necessary, obtaining permits.
Building Inspection offered the following information about keeping residential pools safe this summer:
- Fences, gates and covers that protect the pool from entry by unattended children should be operable and kept in good repair.
- Removable ladders that provide access to above-ground pools should be removed when the pool is unattended.
- Pumps and other electrical equipment should be installed only by a qualified individual familiar with the bonding and grounding provisions of the electrical code.
- Pool heaters should be installed only by a qualified individual familiar with the code requirements for gas and electric appliances.
- Pools with recirculation filters must be equipped with approved entrapment protection.
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - Motorists should expect heavy traffic flows near the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 4, due to the fireworks display during Comcast's Fourth of July Celebration at the fairgrounds. Motorists can expect an increase in traffic beginning at 4:30 p.m. and are advised of the following instructions and road closures:
- Motorists who don't plan to attend the event should avoid the fairgrounds area, including Route 10 between Kingsland and Lewis roads, between 4:30 and 11 p.m.
- Gates open at 5 p.m.
- Fireworks display begins at dark
- Motorists attending the event must enter the fairgrounds from Krause Road.
- Courthouse Road will be open to northbound traffic only. Southbound traffic will be closed beginning at 5 p.m.
- All motorists should use available county parking. Parking will be available at L.C. Bird High School, Chesterfield Tech. Center, and O.B. Gates Elementary School. Handicapped parking will be at L.C. Bird High School. The Chesterfield County Courthouse and Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court parking lots will not be available for use.
- After the event, motorists should exit the fairgrounds northbound on Courthouse Road and westbound on Krause Road.
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - The Chesterfield County Police Department's Animal Control Division impounded a stray cat in the Chesterfield County Courthouse vicinity on June 27. The cat has since tested positive for the rabies virus.
Animal Control officials remind and encourage all county residents to ensure their pets have current rabies vaccination and to contain their pets on their property. Residents should also avoid coming in contact and feeding stray animals.
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA -The Valentine Richmond History Center is sponsoring a bus tour of Chesterfield County's historic sites, Saturday, Aug. 1, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The tour will begin at the Valentine Richmond History Center and will travel south through Manchester to Magnolia Grange where participants will take a tour of the 1822 Federal-style plantation and see its distinctive architecture and embellishments. The tour will then continue to the Chesterfield County Museum Complex to have a box lunch and explore the site. The museum building is a reproduction of the colonial courthouse of 1750 and houses county history exhibits, including early Virginia Indian culture and artifacts from the first iron and coal mines in America. The last stop on the tour will be Eppington Plantation. Built circa 1770, Eppington sits on the banks of the Appomattox River. Thomas Jefferson's two youngest daughters, Polly and Lucy, lived at Eppington during Jefferson's years in Paris. Participants will tour the house and grounds before returning to the Valentine Richmond History Center.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - The Chesterfield County Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services reminds everyone that Chesterfield County prohibits the sale, possession, storage and use of fireworks by anyone other than a licensed and permitted fireworks professional. This prohibition includes pyrotechnics and the use of sparklers, which are considered fireworks. Authorities recommend playing it safe this Fourth of July holiday by attending a regional fireworks display permitted and organized by licensed fireworks professionals.
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - The Chesterfield County Parks and Recreation Department has announced it will name an Ettrick Park walking trail after county resident Evelyn S. Tucker.
The Evelyn S. Tucker Walking Trail will be dedicated during a ceremony Saturday, June 27, at noon. Tucker initiated efforts for the trail's development. She lives in the Ettrick community and recognized that many roads in the area are narrow and unsafe for recreational walkers. Ettrick Park is the first of Chesterfield County's four community parks to have a measured, hard-surface walking trail. In addition to providing walking opportunities, the one-mile trail route connects all recreational facilities in the park.
The dedication ceremony will be held in conjunction with the park's Annual Neighborhood Bash. There will be carnival games, music, prizes and refreshments. Admission is free. Ettrick Park is located at 20400 Laurel Road, Ettrick.
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - A taping of the Chesterfield County 2009 Outstanding Youth Awards program will air nightly through July 13 at 7 p.m. on Channel 96 for Comcast customers and Channel 26 for Verizon customers. The awards were presented on May 7 at L.C. Bird High School to honor youths and adults who have made a difference in their community. CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA - The Chesterfield County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is offering a new class this summer to teach gardeners how to grow vegetables for a fall harvest.
Many vegetables can be harvested in the fall and into winter, including beans, peas, carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach and many greens. Join Master Gardener Sandra Gentry to learn how to grow and harvest these delicious vegetables.
